Comeback van erotica

Ze zijn helemaal hot, erotische magazines.

Deze trend was overduidelijk zichtbaar tijdens QVED, een conferentie over magazinedesign vorig weekend in München. Tijdens twee sessies presenteerden de makers van liefst vijf nieuwe erotische magazines hun blad.

Terwijl de seks- en porno-industrie zich tegenwoordig vooral online manifesteert, lijkt de nieuwe erotica een ruk te maken richting papier – vaak zelfs vanuit een conceptuele gedachte.

In Nederland werd onlangs vanuit Rotterdam Extra Extra gelanceerd, een magazine dat erotiek mixt met het leven in de stad. Uit Spanje komt het Odiseo, dat elk nummer baseert op een nieuw team fotografen en schrijvers, waarbij vanuit één thema wordt gewerkt. Uit London komt TALC Magazine, dat interieur mixt met erotiek en in Bremen ontstond op posterformaat het Self Made Magazine Hand Job, over masturbatie. De vijfde spreker op QVED was Frank Rocholl van Mirage Magazine, een soort telefoonboek dat sinds een paar jaar erotiek combineert met mode, gefotografeerd in nieuwerwetse David Hamilton-stijl.

Een bezoek aan Athenaeum in Amsterdam bevestigt deze trend. Daar kwamen onlangs nieuwe titels binnen zoals Secret Behavior (kunstzinnig erotisch rond een thema) en Adult (hedendaagse zinnelijkheid in jaren 70 vormgeving). Daarnaast kun je er andere interessante indies vinden zoals E.R.O.S. (origineel minimagazine rond het thema ‘verlangen’),  Haute Food (culinaire prikkeling), Sisters (erotiek uit de drag-scene) en Pinups (spreads met stukjes blote man – als je het magazine uit elkaar haalt en aan elkaar plakt, dan heb je hem meer dan levensgroot).

Het waarom van deze informatie op een modeblog? De makers van de bladen die werden gepresenteerd op QVED, geen van allen afkomstig uit de seksindustrie, begonnen hun blad vaak vanuit onvrede met het stereotype, verbouwde en geretoucheerde vrouwbeeld dat ons via de media bereikt. Dat is ook wat veel van deze bladen gemeen hebben; Photoshop-vrije modellen, die soms ook qua uiterlijk en/of leeftijd compleet buiten het hedendaagse ideaal vallen.

Puur natuur en tóch mooi, intelligent, sexy en vernieuwend: het lijkt wel een toverspreuk voor mode…

Come-back of printed erotica

Erotic magazines are hot. During QVED, a conference on editorial design in Munich last weekend, this trend was hard to miss with two sessions in which the editors of five new erotic magazines presented their work.

Today the porn industry manifests itself mostly online, however the new erotica appears to opt for paper, often from a conceptual starting point. Recently in The Netherlands Extra Extra was launched; a magazine that combines eroticism and city life. For very issue of Spanish offering Odiseo a new team of photographers and writers is working to a theme. The London based TALC Magazine combines interior design and eroticism. While Self Made Magazine Hand Job, from Bremen in Germany, is a posterzine about masturbation.  The fifth example used during QVED was Mirage by Frank Rocholl, a phonebook sized magazine that combines fashion and eroticism in an updated David Hamilton style.

A visit to Athenaeum News Centre in Amsterdam confirms this trend with several recent new arrivals such as Secret Behavior (thematic eroticism combined with art) or Adult (contemporary titillation in seventies design). You can also find interesting indies like E.R.O.S. (creative mini-magazine based on the theme of ‘desire’), Haute Food (eroticism & food), Sisters (stimulating drag scene) and Pinups (spreads of a nude guy which you can reassemble to make the protagonist larger than life).

Why the interest in erotica when this blog is supposed to be about fashion? …The makers of the magazines that were presented at QVED, none of whom had their roots in the sex industry, often started their magazine because of discontentment with the images of women in current media: stereotypical, cosmetically rebuilt and retouched.  It is what a lot of these magazines have in common: no photo-shopped models, that at times do not match current beauty ideals because of their age or appearance.

Naturally fresh yet beautiful, intelligent, sexy and innovative – it almost sounds like a magic formula for fashion…
